BODY PARAGRAPHS
The paragraphs are the elements of your mind map produced on the paper.
- Does the main body of the essay:
- Present my key points clearly?
- Develop an argument in a logical sequence?
- Systematically support key points and argument with evidence / examples?
Keys to write a good paragraph
Paragraphs have different functions. In your literature paper, the most common functions performed through writing a critical answer are:
- Explaining
- Evaluating
- Analyzing
- Summarizing
- Comparing and Contrasting
Each question in your paper might expect the student to perform one or more of these functions in the critical answer.
- A clear and simple topic sentence
It establishes the topic of the paragraph and sets up the reader’s expectations regarding the aspect of the topic to be developed in the paragraph. There are different kinds of topic sentences.
- Introducing supportive evidences
- Narrowing the topic
- Providing a contrasting view
- Supporting Sentences
Supporting sentences are used to perform the above functions. All supporting sentences should have a connection to the topic sentence. Furthermore, all supporting sentences must be interconnected. These sentences are also useful in organizing and prioritizing your points or ideas.
- Finishing
The finishing line of a paragraph should draw a conclusion based on the information presented in the paragraph. It should also reinforce the relationship of the paragraph content to the overall aim of the piece of writing. This shows that you are focused and constantly paying attention to the question.
