Tapered roofs are typical of both Gothic and Romanesque architecture. In Romanesque architecture, these roofs are tapered in the middle and do not have any protrusions on the sides or tops. However, in Gothic architecture, these roofs are tapered in the middle or out and feature sharp corners. Both of these styles have been extensively used across Europe. In many places such as in Italy it is common to see both styles being utilized. Some of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals that have been built in Italy are San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella and the church of San Giorgio.
