The most popular and significant kind of priest in the majority of churches is the minister. Many denominations have a single pastor who oversees many congregations. Pentecostal churches have a single pastor, called a Pastor, who leads the congregation of a smaller size. Other examples of clergy include chaplains in the military and teachers in schools and medical professionals in medical institutions.

The Catholic Church, a Christian faith that predates much of Christianity, has many clergy. It is not uncommon for an Catholic to not know the name or the title of the priest. Many priests are married and this can affect their ability to serve the flock of Christians and their ability to fulfill their duties as priests. For a long time, an American priest who divorced and got married was allowed to lead the congregation while in a lifetime of commitment to the Catholic Church.

Some priests have been able despite previous marriages or divorces, to continue their work within the Catholic Church. These priests receive the "certificate of candidacy" which usually includes a vow of loyalty to the Roman Catholic Church. After a few years of being a Catholic priest, a non-denominational church might decide that it requires the services of this kind of person. When this happens the ordination process can be completed, which would then allow that person to serve the church. However in the majority of instances the Catholic Church does not accept converts to its ranks.
