NHL 21 is still coming, EA has announced, but it'll be later than usual. The series, which has traditionally debuted new releases in September, will instead release its latest game in October this year. An exact date has not been announced.

In a post on the game's website, the community team has promised that we'll get a definite release date, a first look, and "plans for the next-gen consoles" in August, and NHL 21 has been confirmed for PS4 and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X will not receive their own versions, but the game will be playable on those systems through backwards compatibility.

Typically, the cover athlete for the yearly game is announced in late June during the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas. That, however, did not happen this year, as the NHL Awards ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19. EA has yet to name a cover athlete for NHL 21 as of this writing. NHL 21 will be available for next-generation, but only through backwards compatibility. In the same letter to the NHL community, the developers addressed this question, stating that they have focused on adding new features rather than “the resource-heavy task of porting the game to new console technology.” So while you should be able to play the game on a Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, an official release for the next-generation will not happen in 2020.

NHL 20 was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 13, 2019. It appears as though NHL 21 will be closed to, if not a month or more later. Many are also wondering if NHL 21 will be playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and if there will be a separate version. That will not be the case, however, the current-generation version will be playable on next-gen systems through forward compatibility.
