Alexander Golbin's editing of key concepts and scientific exploration into sleep psychiatry are examples of a skilled educator and leading researcher. The chapters that deal with sleep-wake cycles, and their effect on daytime alertness/behavior are my favorites. One of the most important discoveries regarding sleep was to recognize that it is not an active, cyclic state of rest. Equally important, normal sleep was identified as the foundation of normal alertness, while abnormal sleep was recognized to be the foundation of abnormal alertness and other psychiatric issues. Research papers that show significant benefits to sleep-alertness relationships support this possibility.
A team of international experts wrote the new book Sleep Psychiatry. Published in England by Taylor & Francis /CRC Group, it categorizes and reviews original research data. Sleep Psychiatry provides this information and presents comprehensive concepts of physiological origin. It also discusses the basis for psychiatric issues, establishing a new field in sleep medicine-Sleep Psychiatry.
Sleep Psychiatry was a collaborative effort that brought together chapters from many universities and research centers. This book contains many fascinating concepts. They include Dr. Vadim Rotenberg's "search activity", a Russian evolutionary approach to human sleeping development, Dr. Alexander Shepovalnikov's adaptive theory of parasomnias, and Dr. Alexander Golbin's sleep origin of daytime habits. Also, the USA-Canadian research teams have presented the dangerous and forensic aspects associated with sleep.
A clinician, doctorate candidate, or sleep researcher can also benefit from the high quality print of the book.
Although the first chapters are not as extensive as the rest, they introduce readers to the new field. Sometimes the text did not provide enough information to clarify certain voids or unknowns. However, the book covered each topic thoroughly and left the reader with the impression that it was written to stimulate interest in learning more. I was fascinated by every chapter that provided new insight into a groundbreaking field. There has been a lot of research over the past few decades, and many millions of dollars have been spent on it. This supports the important findings in sleep psychology. These findings are presented in an informative and peer-reviewed book.
Sleep Psychiatry, a fascinating and massive work, will elicit active discussion and further research to prove and disprove these new approaches for the discovery of biologic, physiologic and psychiatric advantages for millions of patients suffering from sleep disorders and psychiatric issues.
Your review and the growth of the field in Sleep Psychiatry are both things I look forward too. All professionals in sleep medicine or psychiatry will find Sleep Psychiatry "required reading".
