If you are about to buy a Moka pot espresso maker, you must know about these tips on how to keep it safe and maintain it for a long time.

Four Safety and Maintenance Tips

1) Clean it after every wash

After making the coffee, it is important to clean it but in the old way. Once the pot has cooled, disassemble the parts and remove the grounds from the filter basket. Now hand clean the parts gently without using a dishwasher or any abrasive cleaning sponge. There is a risk of the protective coating getting damaged if you are not careful. You can use a paper towel or a soft sponge to wipe away the leftover grounds from the seal. After cleaning it, ensure that it is completely dry before assembling it and making it ready for the next round of coffee.

2) Periodically check the funnel, filter, and the ring

The wear and tear of the parts of the Moka are natural but ensure that you check periodically for signs of wearing. A worn-out seal will result in water leaking out from your Moka and a bitter coffee owing to a faulty brew because of the leak.

Sometimes a blockage in the filter or a worn funnel can result in very little coffee coming from the filter. Checking them periodically and replacing them will ensure a perfect coffee with longer life of your pot.

3) Ensure that the water does not exceed the safety valve

When filling water in the Moka pot, ensure that its level stays below the safety valve. It tends to overflow or result in spilling of the brew mid brewing on exceeding the safety valve. There will always be a little bit of water leftover in the boiler. But overfilling it or crossing the safety valve might cause overflowing and even exploding of the pot.

4) Descale your pot

Even soft water contains minerals, which in turn will build up and cause blockage of the funnel. For descaling, fill the lower part of the Moka with a lot of water and add one tablespoon of lemon and one tablespoon of vinegar. Let it sit for 2-3 hours after to decrease the water level below the safety valve, put it on the heat for 4-5 minutes and turn off the heat. Rinse it out and after the pot cools down, thoroughly wipe it dry with a soft cloth. This will take care of clogging and faulty valve problems along with ensuring a perfect brew.
