Fishing for blue marlin is one of the most exciting hobbies. It is quite fascinating to jump into the water and find one of the most sought after species of marlin. Their excellent form, the great fight they put in and their enormous size make them a catch to be proud of.

Location

This fish is found in all the tropical ocean waters of the world. To ensure that their population does not decline, spawning is done. This is done in places like Mauritius, the Caribbean islands on the western side of the Atlantic, Hawaii, and the Gulf of Guinea on the eastern side of the Atlantic.

Species

There are two species which include the Pacific and Atlantic blue marlin. Scientific research has found that most of the species found in the Atlantic are genetically similar to those found in the Pacific. This is attributed to the prevalence of the p phenotype in both oceans compared to the a phenotype that has not been found in the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Size

There are important gender differences. An adult male weighs 300 pounds, and he rarely exceeds this. Females are typically much larger, reaching up to 1,000 pounds. However, this is still questioned by scientists and fishermen. The records have the largest species caught as a Pacific breed at 1,805 pounds that was caught in Hawaii. In the Atlantic, the largest set was a 1,402 pound fish that was caught in Brazil.

Methods

Different fishing methods and equipment are used. The choice depends mainly on the size of the fish that are targeted for the conditions in the sea. Local cultural practices also come into play. Live baits, artificial lures or rigged natural baits will be used.

Lures

Fishing with artificial lures is a popular method because blue marlin do very well in attempts to catch them. This method came from Hawaii, where the first types of lures were cut out of wood that was encased in drinking glasses or chrome tubes with rubber skirts or upholstery made of vinyl. Modern lures are made in various sizes, shapes, and colors.

Natural bait

Others prefer rigged natural bait blue marlin fishing. They have been used since the previous century and are still popular today. They are used extensively on the east coast of the United States, as well as in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Here, ballyhoo and Spanish mackerel are used to attract the Atlantic breed of marlin. These can be used in combination with artificial lures. With live bait fishing, the smaller species of tuna and skipjack are believed to be the best lure. Its limitation is that the bait cannot be fished quickly to stay alive. This method can only be used in fairly small fishing areas. It is the method used in the Kona, Hawaii fishery.
