Various authors describe many health benefits of ayurvedic honey based on personal usage and experience. But here is a collection of qualities of honey. Honey in Ayurveda is commonly used. Here are the qualities of honey explained in Ayurveda, describing the benefits of drinking honey or using it in one of the other ways.

Types of ayurvedic honey:

  • Comb honey- taken directly from the bee wax comb and stored as it is.
  • Liquid honey- the wax cappings are cut, and combs are processed in a honey centrifuge extractor.
  • Granulated honey- honey is frozen, water elements are separated, leaving behind honey granules.
  • Creamed honey- a blend of 1 part of granulated honey and 9 parts liquid honey is made and stored at 57 degrees until it becomes firm.
  • Chunk honeycomb honey stored in a jar with liquid honey poured over it.

As Ayurvedic honey plays an important role in that same way, saffron is also an exotic spice. It’s important to choose the real one but before deciding which one to use, let’s figure out how to identify real saffron and avoid fake or impure.

Pure saffron is the stigma of the autumn crocus flower. While the flower is purple, the stigma is red. Each crocus bulb produces only one flower, and each flower only produces 3 stigmas. As a result, the spice is difficult to harvest and expensive to purchase. The item labelled saffron can be entirely fake, or it can be real saffron but adulterated with other material. Fake saffron can be corn silk threads, coconut filaments or even dyed horse hair or grate paper. The dye used to colour fake saffron will come off quickly, which becomes plain if you do the water test. Pure saffron can also be adulterated- mixed with fake materials or fillers or even sprayed with water to make it heavier and costlier by weight.

Some tests to identify real/pure saffron:

  • Smell- Many people describe the smell of saffron as sweet. But actually, saffron smells both sweet and husky. It’s no surprise that saffron brings paella to mind. That dish includes saffron in the rice, and the addition of the spice gives paella an unforgettable aroma.

  • Appearance- Saffron threads are trumpet-shaped. If a thread does not swell at one end, it’s fake. If you rub saffron between your fingers, your skin will turn yellow or orange.

  • Time for colour release in water- Put the threads in a small container of lukewarm water. Wait at least 15 min as real saffron will slowly turn the water yellow. It may take up to an hour. The saffron threads themselves retain their red colour. If the water changes colour immediately or turns red or does not change colour, or if the threads lose their colour, the material is not saffron. On the other hand, fakes one fall apart.

  • Taste- While saffron smells sweet, it tastes slightly bitter, not sweet.

  • How it reacts in baking soda- Many people say mixing saffron and baking soda in a small container and then pouring water over the mixture. If it turns yellow, the substance is real saffron.

  • Price- If it’s not too expensive, there would be a chance it’s not real saffron. It should have doubted the Hungarian substance from the beginning, just based on this price test.
