Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru Match 25 Report: Bumrah, Kishan, Suryakumar Thump RCB with 27 Balls Remaining

MI vs RCB Match Highlights and Report-IPL: We are not yet at the halfway stage of the tournament, and miracles have happened a few times in the IPL, but RCB’s IPL 2024 season has all but gone up in smoke. Not only that they have lost 5 out of 6 matches, but the manner of their latest defeat indicates that they simply don’t have the bowling attack to force a miracle.

In a game where finally RCB batters not named Virat Kohli stood up, their bowlers performed even worse than expected as the Mumbai Indians gunned down 197 with 27 balls to spare.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and, unsurprisingly, elected to bowl first. No bowler before tonight, in the 17 seasons of the IPL, had taken a five-wicket haul against RCB. Jasprit Bumrah broke that record of RCB’s and returned with a sensational bowling performance of 5/21 in a game where runs were scored at a run rate of 11.1.

He started it off with the scalp of the current Orange Cap holder, Virat Kohli, who was coming off a century, but this time he underaged his pull and was gone for only three runs.

Bumrah conceded only 8 runs in his first two overs. He returned in the death overs to take four more wickets: Faf du Plessis, who scored 61, was caught at long-on; Vijaykumar Vyshak and Mahipal Lomror were dismissed for ducks; and Saurav Chauhan was Bumrah’s other scalp. This was Bumrah’s second five-for in the IPL.

RCB did gain a couple of positives in their batting department. Apart from du Plessis’ half-century, Rajat Patidar broke out of his rut this season by slamming 50 runs in 26 balls, and Dinesh Karthik hit 53* runs in 23 balls with some innovative shots behind square. RCB finished at 196, which could be considered only par at the Wankhede and under-par, as it was proven, considering RCB’s bowling attack.

Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma wasted little time and went hard after RCB’s bowlers from the third over. From 9 runs after 2 overs, MI raced to 72/0 at the end of the powerplay. They brought up their century partnership in the 9th over, in which Kishan got out for 69 (34). Three overs later, Rohit was back in the dressing room after scoring 38 (24).

If that were fireworks from Rohit and Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, who was dismissed for a duck in the previous game on his return from injury, brought carnage on the RCB bowlers. Suryakumar was 5 (4), and that was all he needed for sighters before tearing into Akash Deep in a 24-run over. He then blasted Topley for 18 runs and raised his fastest IPL half-century, off 17 balls.

Hardik Pandya smoked three sixes off his own in his little but highly impactful innings of 21* (6). The third six off Pandya sealed the chase for MI with plenty of balls left.
